Teaching Statement

As a theatre educator, I am committed to creating a classroom environment where diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just principles, but lived practices. Theatre is an art form built on storytelling, empathy, and human connection. It holds immense power to reflect the multiplicity of human experiences, challenge societal norms, and spark dialogue across cultures, identities, and perspectives. In my teaching, I aim to foster a space where all students, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, or ability, feel seen, heard, and respected.

I believe in the transformative potential of theatre to bridge divides, amplify underrepresented voices, and cultivate a deeper understanding of our shared humanity. To that end, my courses integrate a broad range of playwrights, styles, and cultural traditions, ensuring that students engage with a diversity of viewpoints and experiences. I actively encourage the exploration of non-traditional narratives, and I strive to create opportunities for students to bring their own unique voices and perspectives into the work.

In addition to promoting inclusive curricula, I am committed to providing equitable opportunities for all students to thrive in the classroom and on stage. This includes maintaining an environment where every student feels safe to take creative risks, ask questions, and challenge assumptions. I recognize that each individual’s learning journey is unique, and I am dedicated to offering support that acknowledges and addresses the varied needs of my students, including those related to accessibility, learning differences, and personal backgrounds.

I also acknowledge the importance of ongoing self-reflection and growth as an educator. I am continuously learning about the ways in which systemic inequities manifest in the world of theatre, and I actively seek out professional development opportunities to enhance my ability to teach with cultural competency, inclusivity, and care.

Ultimately, my goal as a theatre educator is to prepare students not only for careers in the arts, but to be thoughtful, compassionate, and responsible global citizens who understand the power of storytelling to enact social change. Through collaborative work, mutual respect, and the celebration of diverse voices and experiences, I strive to create a learning environment where every student feels empowered to contribute, grow, and succeed.
